Davarapala – “Timeline” group exhibition

2019, Art and Culture Centure, Chiang Mai University.

Woven panel with bamboo sticks wrapped with colored yarns.

A woven panel depicting a pair of deva guarding the doors to the temple, the davarapala. The imagery was inspired and adopted from an 18th century Ayuthaya style mural painting at Wat Yai Suwannaram in Petcha Buri Province in Thailand. The idea of the piece is about time and believes. It’s also a starting point for my current journey in developing textile art based on murals and techniques derived from manuscript wrapping and religious hanging banners.

The idea of the construction is inspired from two main sources. Firstly, Buddhist manuscript wrapping that are made of bamboo wrapped with yarns. The wrapping is used to protect fragile the manuscipt written on palm leaves.

Secondly, hanging banners that are offfered to decorate temples. They are made of various materials including woven panels with bamboo inserted. The bamboo sticks strengthen the banner when blown by the wind.

Coloured yarns wrapped on bamboo sticks in the designated areas. When combined, they create simplified form, or pixelated.
